Forests have a tremendous impact on our climate and not just as storehouses of carbon. Forests drive our water cycles. From evaporation to condensation, to cloud formation and precipitation, forests drive every major step in our water cycles.
When we remove forests, we remove that which drives our water cycles. It should be no wonder that our rainfall patterns are all out of whack!

The Worldwide Loss of Soil Moisture: What’s the big deal and what you can do about it

Researchers have reported that between 2000 and 2015, the soils of the world lost over 2,000 billion tons of freshwater.
A few observations, which we will explore:
These findings reveal why the land is dying of thirst.
These findings change how we understand climate change and sea level rise, as water escapes our soils and flows into the atmosphere and into the oceans.
We can be part of the solution, by changing how we nurture our soils, starting right where we live.

My Kentucky Garden

Let’s take a walk in My Kentucky Garden. Each week during the growing season, I give a photographic tour and show the latest happenings in my Kentucky garden, including the native plants, the soil and the insect visitors.
My management priorities are to capture all the rainfall and cause it to soak into the ground, while rapidly improving the soil and growing a vibrant community of native plants.
In the first four growing seasons, I have seen a dramatic increase in insect life that occurs when we plant a diversity of wildflowers and let them spread, while the sun, soil and rain do most of the work.

Plants & Climate Change

Plants cool their surroundings. Plants cool the air locally and regionally. Plants positively impact rainfall on a local basis and across continents. And yet we have eliminated 50% of the plant matter in the last 5,000 years, via deforestation, agriculture and real estate development.
What if we went back in the other direction and added some of the plant matter we have removed? I will argue that we can increase our plant matter and thereby eliminate global warming. In fact, I will argue, this is the quickest, cleanest, safest way to eliminate global warming. If we increase plant matter by 10% we will (arguably) eliminate the greenhouse effect, which is only a 1% excess of incoming heat over outgoing heat.
