Let’s talk about stability.
In our world, such as it is, both people and ecosystems are deprived of the stability they need to thrive. We have this misinterpretation of “survival of the fittest,” as if intense competition brings out the best in us. But nature also exhibits collaboration, community and cooperation.
Add one word to that phrase: “survival of the fittest COMMUNITY,” and you get a better idea of how nature works.
Yes, nature is always changing, and ecosystems are always changing. Sometimes this change is quick and momentous. But that’s not the norm. The norm is stability, with gradual change. It is in this context that people and nature might flourish, much more so than the rapid, radical change that characterizes modern society and has brought us outcomes that nobody really wants.
How can we foster both stability and renewal where we live?
